A few weeks ago, the chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt, spent
four days in Cambridge as the Humanitas visiting professor in the
university's Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and
Humanities, where I work. Afterwards, one of the questions I was most
frequently asked by people who hadn't been around for his visit was:
"Was he wearing the glasses?"
This was interesting because it
suggested a surprisingly wide awareness of something that – until
recently – many people would have dismissed as a typical example of
leading-edge uselessness. It's Google Glass,
an R&D project aimed at developing an "augmented reality
head-mounted display". It comes from the same Google lab that has
produced the self-driving car and, in a way, belongs in the same
category of insanely ambitious projects. But just as the car looks like
becoming a reality, so too do the glasses. In fact, if you're a software
developer and live in the US, you might just be able to acquire a
prototype from the project's website, in return for $1,500 and some original ideas for applications of the technology.
In its current incarnation, the Google Glass headset (not to be confused with Google Goggles,
incidentally) looks encouragingly geeky. It consists of a tiny Android
computer built into the right-hand arm of a spectacles frame. The
computer's display takes the form of a small prism that sits in the
peripheral vision of the wearer's right eye. A tiny camera mounted in
the frame conveys to the computer everything in the user's field of
vision.
The device is activated by voice commands, as in: "OK
glass, record a video." Or: "OK glass, take a picture." This is
illustrated by a stirring promotional video
that manages to be both informative and beyond parody. It shows
attractive Google persons – ie slim, athletic twentysomethings from
California – doing everyday things such as skydiving, swinging on
trapezes, aerobatics, arcane martial arts, rollercoaster rides etc and
using their headsets to record these routine episodes in their busy
lives.
Such videos this will doubtless revive sceptical commentary
about leading-edge uselessness. "So," said one unimpressed (female)
viewer of the video, "you can record videos, take pictures, do Google
searches and access satnav information." What was left unsaid, but
clearly implied was: "So what?"
That's the wrong question. If this
technology really works in the messy real world where wireless
connectivity is always flaky, then people will find good uses for it.
Even now, it could be a boon for people whose short-term memory is poor
or deteriorating. Being able to keep a visual and aural record of one's
daily life might be helpful, as anyone who has an elderly parent in a
nursing home will readily testify. It might also be useful for assisting
technicians trying to diagnose problems miles away from base, or for
medics performing unfamiliar surgical routines in distant locations. And
these are just obvious applications.
What endears the Google
Glass project to me is that it's the latest instalment in a long and
honourable tradition in computer science. It goes all the way
back to one of the great luminaries of the business, Douglas Engelbart,
the man who invented the computer mouse and was a pioneer in networked
computing and the design of graphical user interfaces. (In December
1968, in San Francisco, he gave a live demonstration of what networked computing could do that had a profound influence on the people who built the internet and much of the technology we use today.)
What
motivated Engelbart from the outset was a passionate belief that
computers had the power to augment, rather than replace, human
capabilities. Machines, he believed, should do what machines do best,
thereby freeing up humans to do what they do best. And this
idea of "augmentation" has inspired a good deal of research in the
decades since Engelbart embarked on his mission to change the world.
Many years ago, for example, an MIT student named Steve Mann
used to risk ridicule by walking round with what he called "wearable
computing" kit, much of it looking like something by Heath Robinson.
Over the years, the kit became smaller and the software (much of it
written by Mann) became slicker. And the geeky student became a distinguished professor at the University of Toronto.
It's
too early to say whether the glasses will become transformative. They
may turn out to be something that only appeals to early adopters and
gadget freaks. But I wouldn't bet on it. And if Google produces a
version that can accommodate my bifocals, why, I might even buy them.

Firefox Beta For Android Update Allows Per-Tab Private Browsing
Mozilla announced that it will be
bringing its Firefox OS to carrier-sold devices in 2014. But a
fundamental part of that ecosystem is the performance of its mobile
browser, which is likely why the company is working so hard to perfect
the underlying architecture of its Android version.
Private Browsing is perhaps the biggest
part of the Firefox Beta update, but not the only one. The Monday
announcement also detailed several more updates that users will likely
find interesting.
First the big news though. Prior introduced “Firefox for Android Beta comes with new per tab private browsing,
allowing you to switch between private and standard tabs within the
same browsing session”. While this mode has been called by other,
less-savory, names it has many legitimate uses. For instance, you may
want to shop for your spouse’s birthday present without her accidentally
stumbling across the evidence. Of course, you can erase history, but
Private Browsing has your back in case you forget.
Second, Mozilla has a new and updated
version of the Home screen. The latest Firefox beta allows users to
customize the shortcuts. Users can completely change the images on the
home screen to their favorite or most frequently visited sites. To do
this, simply tap and hold a site to pin it to the Home page.
Also, the latest version introduces compatibility with much more ARMv6 hardware; “Firefox for Android Beta
is now available to phones with minimum requirements of 600MHz, 384MB,
QVGA. New devices supported include: Samsung Galaxy Next (GT-S5570,
GT-S5578), HTC Aria (S31HT), HTC Legend (A6363), Samsung Dart
(SGH-T499), Samsung Galaxy Pop (SCH-i559), Samsung Galaxy Q (SGH-T589).”
Mozilla is going in the opposite
direction of Opera, which is adapting itself to the high-performance
WebKit engine; Firefox started with high-end devices and is now
expanding down, promising good performance on two- and three-year-old
hardware.
Netgear WN3000RP review universal Wi-Fi Range Extender
Netgear WN3000RP review universal Wi-Fi Range Extender
Summary:
Netgear
WN3000RP a perfect Wi-Fi extender. Works like a charm without much
hassle. If you are using a Wi-Fi router and getting minimal or no signal
in other rooms, the WN3000RP will solve the issue.
I have a MTNL Wi-Fi router that gives a good signal in the room where it is placed, however if I move the laptop to another room I can barely access the signal. The only option is to be in the same room where the router is.
I have already covered an article on how to boost the Wi-Fi signal using Windsurfer technique. It did work well at least better than without it. But the signal at times was not that stable; it worked best when there is no obstacle and no movement around. Good enough for surfing but not trust worthy when it came to downloading or uploading stuffs.
I am using Tata Photon plus USB broadband dongle with 11GB free data usage per month with speed of up to 3.1Mbps and after the free data limit I can surf at speed of 115kbps or something for the rest of the billing cycle. I also have the MTNL Wi-Fi with 6GB usage limit per month (up to 3.1Mbps) after which I get speed of around 255 Kbps for the rest of the month.
Usually my Tata Photon limit gets exhausted by 20 to 25th of every month and I have to work on pathetic connection until the next cycle. My desktop is out of range from my MTNL Wi-Fi and hence I got this Netgear WN3000RP Wi-Fi extender and now I am currently using the MTNL network via the Netgear device with full and stable signal.
Netgear WN3000RP review
The WN3000RP installation was pretty simple. This device has two antenna, on/off button, factory reset button, Ethernet port (can be used to connect the laptop / PC) and WPS button.
You just plugin it into the power slot and switch on the power. You can connect using WPS method or using Web browser. You can also connect devices to the ethernet port and access the same wirelessly example (TV, Gaming console etc.).
I used the web browser option for setup. When you switch on the Wi-Fi extender you will see the NETGEAR_EXT as a new SSID. Just ignore you original SSID say for example it was “MYNET”. Connect to NETGEAR_EXT and when connected start the browser.
Once done you will see the NETGEAR setup screen where you will find the list of Wi-Fi SSID, there you will find your original router – MYNET, just select it and add the password just like you would do when using a Wi-Fi device. That’s all you need to do, the changes will be updated on the device and you will now find a new SSID called MYNET_EXT. The EXT is the extension. Just use the MYNET_EXT as your new Wi-Fi hotspot and you are ready to go.
So basically you have the main router i.e. MYNET you can access that or use the MYNET_EXT which in fact will be easily accessible from places where it was impossible to access MYNET. Make sure you put the NetGear WN3000RP extender at a perfect place somewhere in the mid room from where it can easily access the parent Wi-Fi router and can also extend the range to every corner in your house or office.

ASUS FonePad 7-inch Android “Phablet” Announced
ASUS FonePad 7-inch Android “Phablet” Announced
Asus has unveiled its latest handset at MWC 2013 - the Asus FonePad, which it describes as ‘a phone that’s also a tablet’.
The company has obviously seen that,
hey, that Samsung Galaxy Note’s doing quite well, and decided it wants a
piece of the ‘phablet’ action.
It’s a 7” tablet with an IPS screen of
1280 x 800 resolution and sports full phone functionality with 3G HSPA+
connectivity. Of course there’s also WiFi (B/G/N) and Bluetooth 3.0.
Hardware-wise, the ASUS FonePad is one
if the slowly rising number of Android devices with an Intel processor.
It is powered by an Intel Atom Z2420 at 1.2GHz which has an integrated
PowerVR SGX540 graphics processor (GPU). There is 1GB of RAM and 16GB
of internal storage (+32GB microSD max).
There are two versions of the Asus
Fonepad. In Europe, the tablet will come with 16GB of built-in storage
and a 1.2MP front-facing camera. It will launch in April for €220.
For the APAC region, the Fonepad will
have only 8GB of built-in storage but it grows a 3MP camera on the back.
This one will launch in March for $250. Both have microSD card slots
and 5GB of lifetime Asus WebStorage.
The rear camera will capture only 720p
video, but there’s enough power on tap to playback 1080p video you might
have imported to the device.

Lenovo A1000, A3000 and S6000 tablets announced
Lenovo A1000
The A1000 will come in White and Black colours with a 7 inch screen running Jelly Bean OS. Just like the HP tablet that comes with Beats Audio feature the A1000 and other two tablets will come with Dolby Digital Audio enhancement. This tablet will be powered by a dual core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. Other features included are Wi-Fi, micro USB and 3.5mm audio jack. The RAM I believe will be 1GB with 16GB internal storage.
Lenovo A3000
The A3000 will be powered by a Mediatek quad core processor clocked at 1.2GHz running Jelly Bean with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. The 7 inch screen will sport a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. The tablet is 11mm thick with weight of less than 345 grams. This tablet will come in two variants Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G.
This tablet will cost more than the above listed tablets. The S6000 is powered by MTK Quad Core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 8.6 mm thickness and weigh of around 560 grams. The reason why the weight is more cause the tablet is with a bigger IPS screen of 10.1 inches with resolution of 1280×800 pixels. This tablet too will come in Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G version. I think this tab will come with 2GB RAM.
The pricing details are not known yet and the tablets are expected to hit the markets in 2nd quarter of 2013.

The power button, volume rockers are placed on the right side along with a back button (check video review). There is mic and micro USB port that can be used for charging as well as for connecting to PC. On the top side there is the 3.5mm jack and micro USB slot.
The xtron comes with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. You will also find few music videos that are pre-loaded on the internal storage.
- 1GB storage is allocated for Apps of which 883MB is available.
- 5.24GB is for internal storage of which 2.44GB is available. You can reclaim more space by deleting the extra video, files that are pre-installed on the internal storage, i.e. if you want to.
The tablet houses the same Rockchip RK30board as found on Wammy Desire and VeeDee D10DC. Its dual core processor with Mali 400 MP GPU running Jelly Bean OS version 4.1.1.
Benchmark Scores
- Quadrant Benchmark : 3857.

This tablet can easily play 1080p videos and many other supported formats using MX player. Common games like Angry Birds, Temple Run etc works well with no issues. Some of the high end games may or may not work.
Others
There is Wi-Fi which worked well. The tab does get heated a bit when using it for a longer time. The front camera looks good and can be used with Skype for video chats. The sound output is low as compared with Karbonn ST8 Velox tablet.
Battery
The battery is of 3500 mAh capacity and the uptime is quite good. I tried playing a video with full brightness, before playback the battery level was 60 and after 30 minutes the battery level fell to 40. But with minimal brightness the battery level drop was just 5 points in 30 minutes. You can easily watch movies for over 5 hours comfortably. Do note Wi-Fi was switched off. When playing games the battery level may fall much faster (depends on the game).
Lava Xtron review
A powerful 7 inch tablet with good viewing angles and from a well known brand LAVA. There is no built in 3G support, however you can use supported 3G dongles and access 3G.
The same hardware specs can be found on the Wammy Desire and VeeDee D10DC and the price of Desire and Xtron is identical, however D10DC is cheaper by about 500 bucks. The other option is to go for the Karbonn ST8 with 8 inch screen for Rs. 7290.

Microsoft Expected To Reveal Xbox 720 in April
Following Sony’s PlayStation
4 announcement earlier this week, Microsoft is said to announce
the next-generation Xbox console at a media event in April, according to
publication Computer and Video Games.
Sony’s “surprise” PlayStation 4
announcement earlier this week reportedly caught Microsoft off guard at
first, according to one Sony senior official that asked not to be named.
The person in question said they definitely ruffled some feathers which
seems likely considering most expected the two companies to announce
their next generation consoles at E3 later this year.
Further evidence supporting Microsoft’s
decision to host a one-off event is the fact that Ustechs, a company
that has worked with Microsoft in the past on other media briefings,
recently registered the domain XboxEvent.com.
Leaks for the Xbox 720 (codenamed
Durango) have indicated it will feature some serious power internally.
An 8-core 1.6GHz processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, an 800MHz graphics card, a
6x Blu-ray drive, USB 3.0, and gigabit Ethernet are rumoured to be
included.
Microsoft is also said to include a new
Kinect sensor that will include not only better tracking results for
large rooms, but will ship with the console by default.
At its media event, Sony wasn’t able to
show the actual hardware for its PlayStation 4, and only detailed a few
specs, the new UI, and controller with touchpad. It’s not known if
Microsoft will show off the Xbox design at its event. Leaks haven’t
pointed to what the design will look like as of yet.
Baird Equity Research last month said
the next-generation Xbox will be sold for $350-$400 in the autumn, right
in time for the Christmas shopping season that’s sure to bring a slew
of sales to the company.

Huawei Finally Announces The Ascend P2
Huawei has launched the Ascend P2 today,
its new flagship Android smartphone equipped with a 4.7-inch HD display
and running version 4.1 (Jelly Bean) of Google’s popular mobile
operating system.
This is a follow-up to the Ascend P1 and is being dubbed as “the world’s fastest smartphone.”
The new Android handset has a quad-core
1.5GHz processor at its core, along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal
storage. There’s a 13-megapixel camera around the back, along with a
1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling.
The 8.4mm thin Ascend P2 has a 4.7-inch
720p IPS screen with 312ppi ratio. This came as a surprise since all the
previous rumors pointed to a 1080p display unit. The screen is covered
by a Gorilla Glass 2 layer and is rounded at the edges to create an
“Infinity pool” perception as Huawei calls it.
The capacitive touchscreen layer is
embedded inside the display cell and it allows operation with gloves or
nails, much like the one on the Nokia Lumia 920.
The Huawei Ascend P2 is skinned with the
company’s Emotion UI 1.5 which might not add to much to the experience
Android experience.
Huawei Ascend P2 also uses Huawei’s
proprietary Quick Power Control (QPC) and Automated Discontinuous
Reception (ADRX) power-saving technologies, which allegedly reduce power
consumption and charging time by more than 25% compared to other
smartphones.
Huawei declared its plans to focus on
smartphone development and worldwide distribution. It also announced
full-year global sales revenue of $7.5 billion with 127 million shipped
devices. 52 million of those devices are handsets and 32 of those are
smartphones.

Alcatel unveils the Firefox OS running One Touch Fire at MWC
Joining the bandwagon of Firefox OS
running devices, Alcatel has unveiled the One Touch Fire at the Mobile
World Congress. Just like the earlier leaked ZTE Open, Alcatel One Touch
Fire too is an entry-level smartphone.
The Alcatel One Touch Fire comes with a
3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display and is powered by a 1GHz
processor paired with just 256MB of RAM. The design of the Alcatel One
touch Fire is based on the Keon developer preview Firefox OS phone,
which was announced last month.
The Firefox OS running smartphone from
Alcatel would house a 3.2 megapixel camera at the back and would come
with 512MB of internal storage, which can be further expanded using a
micro-SD card. The connectivity options on the upcoming Alcatel One Touch
Fire would include WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS and 3G and the smartphone
also packs-in a 1,400mAh battery
There is no world on the pricing and
availability of the smartphone as of now, but Mozilla is trying to tap
on the emerging markets with the new OS and says that the first markets
to get it’s phones would include- Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico,
Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and Venezuela.
By launching the smartphones in emerging
markets where the entry and mid-level devices are more popular, Mozilla
would try and hope to dent the sales of smartphones running on Android
OS and later, venture into a high-end smartphone to take on the like of
iPhone and other high-end Android devices.

Alcatel announces One Touch Idol X with 5-inch Full HD display and Android 4.2
Alcatel isn’t the kind of manufacturer
which you would associate with high-end Android devices but contrary to
it’s image, the company has announced a new premium Android smartphone-
the One Touch Idol X at Mobile World Congress. The new smartphone from
Alcatel is placed right up with the top-Android smartphones expected
this year, as far as specifications are concerned.
The Alcatel One Touch Idol X
boasts of a stunning 5-inch Full HD display and the smartphone is
powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor but the make of the CPU is still
unknown. Also, the amount of RAM on the device is still unknown. The
One Touch Idol X runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and gets 16GB of
on-board storage along with a micro-SD card slot for storage expansion.
Just like other top-end smartphones, Alcatel One Touch Idol X
houses a 13 megapixel camera at the back and the smartphone will be
offered in a variety of colors like blue, yellow and red. The smartphone
also gets a 2,000mAh battery andcomes with all the standard

Nvidia Tegra 4 Benchmark scores out, Smokes the competition
When Nvidia showcased the new Tegra 4
processor at Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, we knew
that the performance of the new chip would be nothing but spectacular
and now, at Mobile World Congress, Nvidia has finally showed us what the
Tegra 4 is capable of.
At the ongoing MWC, Nvidia has showed
off the power of the new Tegra 4 processor by running some benchmark
tests on a developer preview smartphone, powered by the new processor
and the results of the tests have left us spellbound. The Nvidia Tegra 4
is a monster when it comes to processing power.
The reference smartphone powered by the
new Tegra 4 processor scored a whooping 36,000 in AnTuTu Benchmarks, and
that is the greatest score we’ve ever seen for a device. Also, the
Quadrant 2.0 score managed to breach the 16,000 mark whereas in the
GLBenchmark’s Egypt offscreen test, the device averaged at 57 frames per
second (fps) at 1080p. There’s no doubt that the new chip smokes the
competition as far as benchmark scores are concerned, but it is also
important to know that the device on which these benchmark tests were
conducted, was far from a retail-ready state.
With the Tegra 4 leading the pack of
next-gen processors, it will be interesting to see how well the
competition stacks up. Qualcomm has already announced that it’s upcoming
Snapdragon 800 processor would be better than the Tegra 4 and the other
big player Samsung is also preparing it’s Exynos 5 Octa Core processor,
which might well leave both these processors behind.Let’s hope that
both Samsung and Qualcomm soon show us the benchmark tests of their new
processors.

Videocon A27 ICS powered 1GHz 3G phone for Rs. 5999
The Videocon A27 supports dual SIM with 3G (3.75G). The price of approx Rs. 6,000 I believe is too high especially when the Micromax A89 a dual core handset is available for just Rs. 200 extra i.e. for approx Rs. 6,200.
The A27 runs on Android 4.0 OS with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. The handset is 11 mm thick and comes with dual cameras. A front 0.3 megapixel and a rear 3.0 megapixel with flash. The handset supports 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, 3.5mm jack, GPS with A-GPS and micro USB.

For the price I think it will be better to go with the Micromax A89 as you get the power of dual core, can run 720p videos and the camera is just about the same as on Videocon A27.

There is 2MP rear camera which is no good. The front camera is in fact better even though it’s of a VGA quality.
Gaming
I did test few games angry birds, temple run etc which did work well. I tried the NOVA 3 it does work. However it takes a lot of time about 4 to 5 minutes for loading. But it works. I will come up with the NOVA video review soon.

The battery is of 8000mAh capacity as mentioned on the Wickedleak site and I think it can easily last for over 5 and a half hours of continuous usage.
Others
The Wickedleak site mentions that the tablet can play 4K videos (4096×2160). I am checking this and will update soon.

Lava Iris 454 dual core 4.5 inch qHD with ICS OS launched
The Iris 454 price is not yet disclosed but could be Between Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 9000. Those who find the 5 inch phones too big to handle, here is an alternative, the same stuff in a smaller size of 4.5 inches. In fact there are already some small sized phones (under 5 inch screen) like the Lava Xolo A700, Xolo A800 and Celkon A200 to name a few. But this handset the Iris 454 may be cheaper than A700 and A800 models.
The Lava Iris 454 as mentioned is powered by 1GHz Dual core Cortex A9 processor, which I believe is MTK 6577 with PowerVR SGX 531 GPU. The RAM is modest 512MB with 4GB internal storage and micro SD slot that supports SD card of up to 32GB.
The 454 supports dual SIM with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, micro USB and 3.5mm jack. The camera resolution and probably the quality will be the same as seen on other MTK6577 hardware. Its 8MP Auto Focus with LED and supports video recording.
The handset is pretty slim with a 9.9mm thickness and weight is about 154 grams. A 1650 mAh battery keeps the handset going for about 280 hours in standby mode and you can expect a talktime of about 5 hours.
If the handset is priced at around 8,500 for under it could be a great buy, well as long as there is no under 5 inch quad core competitor.
- Dual SIM with Dual Standby
- 1GHz dual core.
- ICS OS Android 4.0.4 with TouchWiz user interface.
- 4.5 inch IPS capacitive touchscreen with qHD (960×540 pixels) with 16M colors.
- 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage (2GB user available space) and micro SD slot.
- 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Micro USB, FM and 3.5 mm audio jack.
- 8MP rear AF camera with LED and front VGA camera.
- Sensors: Gsensor and proximity. (Not sure if it has light sensors).
- 1650 mAh Li-ion battery with up to 5 hours talktime and over 200 hours standby time.
- Price Rs. 8,500.
